From the first time they bang a spoon on a pot, virtually all children love to make music – and their enjoyment probably has a scientific basis: countless studies on infant brain development have documented the effects of listening to music on building neural connections in the brain. Active participation does even more than passive listening to build strong neural connections in children. Children who actively participate in music making tend to do better in reading and math when they start school, develop a higher self-esteem, and are able to focus better at individual tasks. Music also enhances memory skills, poise, and self-expression. And, of course, it brings us joy.

Parents, regardless of their own previous musical experience, can have an active part in introducing their child to music. In addition then, to building cognitive, social, and emotional development – as well as creating beauty and joy – music can be a wonderful bonding experience for you and your child, building powerful memories for your family to share. For all these reasons, making music is not just fun, but vital – in infancy, throughout childhood, and beyond.

The KinderGuitar Songbook Series (coming soon!) was developed to help parents and educators at each one of these stages by providing a wealth of multicultural music for singing with and to your little ones, providing the tools for developing a sophisticated sense of pulse and rhythm for clapping and tapping, and finally a sound, age-appropriate method for starting active play on the guitar in an easy to use format once they are ready. The guitar is a perfect starting instrument for children because it is both harmonic and melodic, is available in child-friendly sizes, and with a few movements of the fingers, can produce a warm, beautiful sound.

Leo García’s KinderGuitar has educated hundreds of children in the Bay Area over the last eight years. Popular because of its accessible and multicultural curriculum, KinderGuitar is based on the innovative integration and adaptation of early music education methods applied to the guitar.
